Good news everyone! Updates are back up to twice a week! XD I can only guarantee the new schedule through the end of the chapter but it should help to get things moving again. Still no buffer, but the rest of the pages for the chapter are close to finished (should have a buffer by the end of today).

If you were wondering what was up with the water hand page about 10 updates ago, this page and a couple more pages in the chapter should explain things a little better.

As for the freezing, Bjorn doesn’t just melt things; he can, also, freeze them. Dwarven abilities are essentially tied to temperature control of solids. The metal that Bjorn carries on him, allows him to indirectly interact with gases and liquids. He can also use the metal as a weapon or a shield, but that’s not his preferred use. Living in a mountain, Bjorn learned to hone his abilities by deforming rocks which is how he is very adept at moving them around.

Rock fact time: Temperature and pressure are what affect rock deformation. A change to one or the other directly affects the behavior of rocks. One of the dangers in mining is that digging tunnels takes pressure off of the remaining rock which leads to the remaining rock explosively expanding to fill the newly formed empty space. It’s kind of like how if you press down on a foam mattress, the mattress springs back to it’s original shape once the pressure is removed.

Does that mean he can manipulate most material between solid and liquid state?
The way I get is that it is not generating or taking away heat but rather manipulating it within the material as you stated.

(aaaand caught up with your pages :D)

Once a solid starts to liquify or sublimate, it becomes increasingly harder to work with. The really short answer is that anything that's not solid is not manipulable but there is a little bit of a grey area. Bjorn's ability to transfer energy into or out of an item depends upon it's molecular structure staying stable. Once atoms start flowing, it would take more concentration than what any dwarf is capable of to continue adding (or subtracting) energy to the item without the use of an intermediary solid. Losing concentration when trying to manipulate hot liquids tends to be deadly; Bjorn isn't a risk taker and so would not consider it something he can do.

While Bjorn is manipulating the energy within a material, his abilities obey the concept of conservation of energy. Dwarves with magical abilities act as capacitors, storing large amounts of energy within their bodies. On a subconscious level dwarves with magical talents are constantly taking some heat/energy out of the environment and storing it within their body. When a dwarf heats something up, they are taking the energy stored in their body and using that to excite the electrons of that something. If they don't have any heat stored in their body, they would have to draw upon their own body heat/life force. When cooling something, they are pulling and storing that energy in their bodies.

What dwarves consider the pinnacle of their abilities is fire creation from nothing - very, very few have ever done that and fewer have survived the act. A larger number of dwarves have been able to create fire by heating up an intermediary solid (usually wood), but even that number is small (and full of many burn victims). On his own, Bjorn is not able to start a fire, but he knows tricks to spark a fire using metal.

Hope that helps with understanding how Bjorn's abilities work! Please let me know if I made things more confusing or if you have any questions! :)

(I'm always impressed when someone makes it through the entire archive! There's so much there! XD )

Whoa! Thank you!
This is like the best comment I have ever received :D

Yeah, that makes perfect sense and is very much appreciated.
You have it nicely broken down to the first thermodynamics law which is something I have not seen yet, I think.
Usually it does not matter and understandably so (magic, fantasy, why bother anyway) but this is a really nice touch and adds some more perspective to it.
He cannot just use it willy-nilly and I can see how fire creation could be a problem.
Ironic when fire is usually the base magic :D

First thermodynamics law! :) It's been a long time since I set foot in a physics classroom and couldn't remember which thing, exactly, I based dwarven abilities on. All I could remember was conservation of energy. There's actually a lot of science at the heart of the magic system, it just doesn't show up overtly in the story because it's fantasy and none of the characters are science minded.

I completely didn't catch the irony of fire being the pinnacle of an ability. I love that you pointed that out! XD

Which makes it even more ironic considering science is usually the opposite of magic.
Yet you make it so that science is behind magic as well :D
I had physics for a while but then realized I am more interested in the math behind it so I turned that way <_<

Omg I loooove the colors on this page--so pretty! I'm a HUGE fan of the cooler side of the color wheel <33

I'm really happy there will be more updates!! Can't wait til the next page! (I really wanna watch your comic process sometime XDD-- your comic just looks so.. unique <333-- in a very good way!)

Then you're going to love the look of the next couple of pages, too! :)

I have no clue what hours you keep, but if our hours align at some time, I'd be happy to show you what I do (this applies to anyone reading - I'll happily share art tricks). XD
